A walk through the Bay District, in five files

Minato, the Bay Line, the canal and the sea wall: the coast of the city, filed over twelve years.

FILED BY SHINKŌ CO. · ARCHIVE OFFICE ·

There is a moment, a little after the last train, when the city stops performing. The announcements end, the shutters come down, and what remains is the infrastructure itself: rails, cables, windows, the hum of a transformer two streets away.

That is the moment SHINKŌ Co. has been recording since 1987. Not the city as a postcard, but the city as it is when nobody is looking at it.

One place, one night

Each file starts with a single location and a single set of conditions. Light rain, 14°C, a ward after midnight. Everything else follows from there: the angle of the light on wet concrete, the distance of the traffic, the rhythm of the rain on a canopy.

An empty street is the only place where a city really speaks.

Why the frame stays empty

We never add people. Not out of melancholy, but out of respect for the viewer: the empty frame is left for you. You are the one standing on the platform.

Living with the files

Most of our viewers do not watch a file. They live next to it: on a second screen while working, in the background of a late evening, as a window that opens somewhere quieter. That is exactly what the files are made for.

If this note made you want to stay a little longer in the ward, the full file is three hours long. It is waiting for you on YouTube.
